Quince by ldjessee Quince by ldjessee
This is a study of Juan Sanchez Cotan's Quince, Cabbage, Melon, and Cucumber (oil on canvas, ca 1602) I made while in the San Diego Museum of Art. This painting is amazing, not only for its very vivid black, and what seems like perfect light and shadow renderings, but also the absolute flawlessness in placing these items in 3D space.
My study of it really falls down, such as the cucumber is not positioned in the environment correctly. It is flat, and appears to be oriented to far tilted forward. It causes some dis-congruity of that side of the frame. Like a sore in your mouth, your eyes keep being drawn back to how wrong it is.
Not as noticeable at first, but the melon is also tilted forward too much.
I did this study while standing about 7 to 10 feet from the painting, having to move while people passed by.
